I was invited to a wedding several years ago, but God wasn’t. The ceremony was held in a bar. When the vows were spoken all mention of God was omitted. Many of the people there were atheists. The bride and groom professed atheism. I was greatly outnumbered.

As I moved around the room talking with the guests, I felt a tap on my shoulder. A voice spoke in my ear, “I’m welcome here and you can’t do anything about it”. I knew it was something dark, a dark being. I spoke back, it was noisy so no one could hear me, “You may be welcome here but you can’t touch me”. And he left me.

It was an odd feeling to be in an atmosphere where God wasn’t welcome. And it wasn’t that they were consciously embracing the darkness, but the absence of light invites the darkness. Go into a room void of light, turn on the light, and the darkness leaves. Turn off the light and the darkness returns. So it is with the human soul.
