Visits From The Other Side

I have seen ghosts, spirits, whatever you want to call them most of my life. When I was about 7 or 8 was the first time I can remember seeing anything. My father was in the Army, and we were stationed in Germany at the time.

The apartment building we lived in was a multi-floored, multi-housing unit. The only thing that separated the housing units from the German part of town was a chain link fence that ran around the local swimming pool. Directly behind our apartment building was a playground that sat up on a hill. Above the playground on another hill was a football field the military Youth Activities Center used for pee-wee football, soccer, and things like that. We lived on the first floor of the apartment building. Directly below our kitchen window were the steps going down to lead into the basement of the building. That set of steps put the kitchen window about 20-25 feet off the ground.

Like I said, my brother and I were washing the dishes, All of the sudden I get this feeling that we are being watched. I look up in time to see a shadow appear from the hill the football field was on, move about 30-40 feet across the end of the field and disappear again. The shadow didn’t move like a man though. It moved sort of slumped forward, arms hanging loosely at its sides and quick. The closest thing I can liken it to is the famous footage of Bigfoot, the way it moved. I didn’t really think anything about it then. I went back to washing dishes.

About 10 minutes later I heard a distinct tap on the window. Now remember this window is about 20-25 feet up. My brother had left the kitchen to use the restroom. I was the only one there. I looked out the window and was looking into the face of my paternal grandmother. She smiled at me, blew me a kiss, and mouthed “Everything will be ok”. I wasn’t sure what to think. I don’t think I even told my parents about it at the time. The thing is my grandmother passed away in 1977 when I was just 3. We had been close before she died, but even so I didn’t remember alot about her other than what she looked like, loved growing roses, and making dolls for craft fairs.

I went about everything like nothing had happened. About 6 months later I was getting ready for bed when I saw her again standing by my bed as I walked into my room from the bathroom. She smiled at me again and said, “Don’t worry, Junior, everything will be ok. Grandpa is fine”. The next day my dad went to work like every other day. When he reported for duty he had a message waiting for him to see his CO. When he went in to see him he was told that his brother had been trying to get in touch with him and to call him immediately. When he called my uncle, he told my dad that my grandfather had passed away the day before of a massive heart attack. With the 8 hour difference between the States and Europe, I had seen my grandmother at what I believe is the exact time my grandfather had his heart attack.

The sad part is that we were scheduled to leave Germany in 2 more months and he had been looking forward to seeing me and my brother and sister again. All he talked about was that he was going to get to see his babies again….

Since then I have seen my grandmother several times whenever something important was going to happen. Whether it was good or bad.
