This was one of those deja vu moments when you’re not sure exactly what’s going on but you know you’ve been there before. My husband and I moved in his grandmother’s house. There were quite a few old, antique furniture items left in the house, including several old floor lamps. One day I was moving them around and the base of one caught my eye. It had a little knob looking thing on it. I pushed it with my foot, and whalah, a light in the base came on. And a deja vu moment flashed in my brain. It was like I was suspended in time. All I could see was the base of that lamp and the light coming from it, everything else was dark. I was frozen right there for what seemed like a long time but was probably only several seconds.

I had seen that floor lamp somewhere before. I had stood with my foot on that switch before. Had I lived it? Had I dreamed it? All I know was that moment was already in my brain, and I was experiencing it for the second time.

Trapped in a hotel room because of an unrelenting thunderstorm, we flipped channels for something to watch. Since not much was available, we settled on a really silly movie, Lake Placid. In this movie, Betty White plays Delores Bickerman who leads cows to their deaths as fodder for a crocodile. Someone gets curious as to why Delores’ husband hasn’t been seen in several years and asks about his whereabouts. Stuttering and hesitating, Delores admits the crocodile devoured him. Apparently, she feels sorry enough for the croc that she doesn’t want him destroyed by the authorities, and instead continues to feed the beast.

I thought, “How stupid can this be? The crocodile killer her husband and she will be next!” Deja Vu! I had the unmistakable feeling I’d seen this movie before, but I hadn’t. And in that instant, I thought of all the things in my life that had killed others I knew and yet I continued to participate: drinking, cigarettes, and other things I’d rather not mention. All deadly sooner or later, and yet I continued to feed that “crocodile” in my life, never knowing when it would turn on me and devour me. That was the way it was, but I broke free from those deadly crocodiles, and life is so much better now. It’s amazing what you can get from a bad movie on a rainy afternoon.

Something I remember was back during my single days. I went months without a date and was always on the lookout for “Mr. Right.” Talking to a couple of guys who definitely weren’t “Mr. Right”, I glanced at their feet. One of them had on these really unusual sandals. Of course, I had to know where he got them, and it was at a local sporting goods store. But there was something about those sandals…I remember looking at them and thinking, “When is he ever going to get here?” As I looked at those sandals, an overwhelming longing for that special someone I’d always wanted but never found almost brought me to my knees.

About a year later, I met that special someone. Guess who he was? The owner of the sporting goods store that sold those sandals!
