I was finally going to that big convention I was so excited about. As I packed and ran around gathering everything on my list, I made a pile by the door. On one trip by the dining table, I noticed my purse hanging on the chair. I thought to myself, “I’d better get my purse right now or I’ll forget it”, but I didn’t stop to place it on the pile by the door.

Later, I hurried out the door so I’d be there by noon to hear my favorite speaker. Except I didn’t make it by noon. An hour and a half into my journey, when I stopped at a post office to buy a stamp, I realized I HAD forgotten my purse, just like I’d said I would. I called my husband, and he agreed to go home for my purse and bring it to his place of employment. That saved me an hour. But I still wasted two hours coming back for my purse. And I missed my favorite speaker.

I’d been listening to a preacher talking about angels and how they obey what we say. So when I said, “I’d better get my purse right now or I’ll forget it”, and then I didn’t get it, did they think I meant to leave it?

And is that the same as when I tell my cat not to get in my path when I walk through the house in the dark or I’ll step on her? And I do? Or when the assistant pastor says no one shows up for church when the regular pastor is gone? And they don’t? Or when a mother tells her child not to go into the street or they’ll be run over by a car? And they are?

God used words to create. We are created in his image. Are our words creating our world, both good and bad? Are we limiting what God or His angels can do for us by the words we say? I wonder.

In the Bible, it mentions that God’s word does not return void but accomplishes what he purposes. Do our words also accomplish something? Are our words tearing down the people around us? Are our words destroying our health? Are our words shaping destinies without our realization? Saying is praying and praying is saying. I think I’ll pay more attention to what I’m saying.

I was at a conference by myself, and another single lady introduced herself and asked if we could hang out together. Although I was a little leery of befriending a complete stranger, I welcomed the company and silently vowed to keep a safe distance. As the week progressed, we talked about a lot of things, especially our jobs. She was a home health nurse in a very rural community with a clientèle of dying patients. One of her patients was a woman with uterine cancer. As she visited the woman, they became friends and the woman confided many things to her. She shared how when she was younger, she was sexually promiscuous, having had many partners during her lifetime, even up until her illness, and wondered what affect that would have on her destiny after death. The home health nurse often prayed with her. During one of those prayer times, she “saw” something. She “saw” a ball of snakes in the woman’s uterus. It was about a foot in diameter and filled her belly. They were turning and writhing inside the woman. Understandably, she was startled and scared and immediately stopped praying. She said the woman died shortly after that and she couldn’t bring herself to go back to the place in prayer where she saw the snakes. She felt that the snakes had something to do with the woman’s illness and her previous lifestyle but was unsure of exactly what all it meant.

I was invited to a wedding several years ago, but God wasn’t. The ceremony was held in a bar. When the vows were spoken all mention of God was omitted. Many of the people there were atheists. The bride and groom professed atheism. I was greatly outnumbered.

As I moved around the room talking with the guests, I felt a tap on my shoulder. A voice spoke in my ear, “I’m welcome here and you can’t do anything about it”. I knew it was something dark, a dark being. I spoke back, it was noisy so no one could hear me, “You may be welcome here but you can’t touch me”. And he left me.

It was an odd feeling to be in an atmosphere where God wasn’t welcome. And it wasn’t that they were consciously embracing the darkness, but the absence of light invites the darkness. Go into a room void of light, turn on the light, and the darkness leaves. Turn off the light and the darkness returns. So it is with the human soul.
